Kitten in the Rain: Rescuing Howlett

“In rescuing animals, I lost my mind but I found my soul.”

I’ve been feeling down last Wednesday, September 9, 2015. My head hurt so much. I was physically and emotionally tired. I was thinking not to go to work, but I also didn’t want to stay in my bed doing nothing. So, I tried to push myself to go to work.

I rode a jeepney to Pioneer where my office is located. I was late than my usual schedule but I didn’t mind. I got off the jeep and walked towards the office, but then I saw a dirty ginger kitten on the walkway. He was lying down, rolling and showing his belly. I went near him to see if he’s friendly. I touched him and he’s purring loud. It felt good seeing a friendly kitten on a bad day. So I decided to buy him some food to eat. On a tight budget, I bought him some wet food.

'Om nom nom'

‘Om nom nom’

He was very hungry. I can hear his ‘om nom noms’. I observed him while he’s busy munching on his food. He’s approximately 3 months and he has a small wound in his neck. I wonder why he was abandoned and left at that place. Pioneer isn’t a safe place for kittens. I have seen and heard stories about cats getting run over by vehicles in there. I was worried.

Made him a small paper bag house... which he actually didn't like.

The skies were dark and it was about to drizzle, I was praying that it won’t continue to rain. I made kitty a small house made out of paper bag. He went inside, then I said my final goodbyes since I still need to go back to work. He just sat there.

I was working but still worried. I continually looked at the dark skies hoping that it wouldn’t rain, but it did. The rain was so strong and I panicked. I hurriedly went to see if he was alright.

I went back and I was running fast then I heard a loud cry. It was the kitten, sitting, lost, and drenched in the rain. He tried to find some shelter, but since the rain was too strong, he couldn’t move. I ran towards him and immediately held him. He was shivering. I quickly found a dry place for him to stay and carried him there. I wrapped him around my scarf and dried off his fur but he was still shivering. I checked his nose and gums and noticed he was pale.

I am sorry, kitty.” I said to him. “I am sorry I that I left you behind.” I held him close to me.. and now I am keeping my promise.

I immediately called help to the guards around Pioneer. I asked for a small box for kitty to stay. Even though it took me almost an hour, I was lucky that everybody I approached never hesitated to help. I left him inside the box with my scarf and some food near my office. The guards agreed, I was so happy. I promised them that I would check the kitty every two hours and I’ll get him after my shift.

The kitten was tired, and he fell asleep.

After my shift, Rae went to my workplace to pick me up. I showed him this ginger furball and after a while, he also fell for him. We called him “Howlett” since my favorite Marvel superhero is Wolverine.

I noticed that he does not want to stay inside the box like other cats, but instead, he wants to feel that he’s beside us, humans. He wants to play and be held. He was the sweetest. He always purrs loudly. Rescuing him was one of the greatest feelings I’ve ever felt.

He's quite attached with my id.

I am not allowed to bring pets in my dorm, so I smuggled kitty inside when my roommates were sleeping. Luckily, he wasn’t loud. He immediately fell asleep beside me. He would wake up at the middle of the night and play a little with my ID and sleep beside it. He was such a darling.

“Selfie!”

This kitty is probably the best alarm clock. He woke me up at 8 am in the morning with this face.

Now, I found him a forever home. A fur-parent that could look at him and cuddle with him every night. His name is now Butch. Thanks to Cat Care Philippines for helping me find someone for him.

As of today (October 2015), his forever furmom is now sending me updates of Butch everyday. She never forget to update me about their everyday adventures. She loves him like how a mother would love a child.

He’s my third rescue as of the moment and I am planning to rescue more. I hope my story inspires people to help and respect animals. And please: Adopt, don’t shop.

What a great story! Howlett is a cute name. I am not much of a cat lover, but I am happy to know that he has finally a home and no longer roams on the streets. So thanks for sharing. 🙂
